about

Alex Sesper sound performance for “Soft Shell” exhibition by Ayelet Ben Dor (b.1981, Israel) and Alexandre Cruz (Sesper) (b.1973, Brazil) at P8 Gallery (Tel Aviv), curated by Estee Balsam and Camea Smith, in January 2024.

The appearance of a soft shell in nature also refers to the process of development and shape shifting. A soft shell is a temporary phenomenon marked in the lives of arthropods, beginning in the stage during which an outer harder shell is shed, until the time when a new long-lasting shell is regrown. In a juxtaposition of the current time and place, the term soft shell serves as a metaphor for a need or a given situation in the face of a new sound box that intensifies our aural and visual surroundings since October 7th.

Their works are composed of layers upon layers of materials, adopted by the artists and assembled together delicately, creating a multi-faceted, kaleidoscopic microcosm.
